KINESIOLOGY LIBRARY RESOURCES
Kinesiology students can learn how to make use of the Robert L. Powell Library and its resources with the instructional videos found on the library web site under “Using the Library”. They may also learn how to make use of many of the databases listed below with our subscription to “Niche Academy” video tutorials.
The subscription databases we have that provide information related to aspects of Kinesiology are these:
- Academic Search Ultimate : Interdisciplinary index and full text database covering many academic journals from many fields of study.
- Alt HealthWatch : Focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.
- Annual Reviews : Captures current understanding of a topic, including what is well supported and what is controversial; Sets the work in historical context; Highlights the major questions that remain to be addressed and the likely course of research in upcoming years; and Outlines the practical applications and general significance of research to society.
- Gale OneFile: Health and Medicine: Quickly access articles from scholarly journals and other trusted periodicals. Includes Topic Finder, Subject Guide Search, and Publication Search
- Gale OneFile: Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine: Quickly access articles from scholarly journals and other trusted periodicals. Includes Topic Finder, Subject Guide Search, and Publication Search
- Health Source: Consumer : Provides consumer health information on many health topics.
- Health Source: Nursing/Academic : Provides scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines.
- ProQuest Dissertations : The world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses.
- ProQuest Research Library : Provides access to a wide range of popular academic subjects.
- Salem Press Reference : Search reference sources for Principles of Science, Health & Wellness, Careers in Sports Medicine & Training and more.
I have also prepared a Research Guide for the Kinesiology discipline. It contains the above databases as well as information on Open Access Resources, Theses & Dissertations, Web Resources, Search Strategies, Subject Authority schemes: LCSH and MeSH, and Finding Review Articles, with instructions for finding scientific research articles.
In addition, students may search the Discovery catalog to find tens of thousands of resources on Kinesiology and related subjects. While the Powell Library will not have all the resources, we do offer an InterLibrary Loan Service, which allows students to request needed items at no cost to them. The Powell Library also offers a Book Scanning Service, especially useful to Online students, for selected pages/chapters of a needed book.
While TMU students cannot access other libraries’ subscription databases through the Powell Library, many university libraries and certainly all public libraries do allow locals to acquire a library card thereby granting them access to their respective collections.
