Finding Journals

"Find Journals" is an A to Z list of all the full text journals the Powell Library provides, whether hardcopy on the shelf or full text in an online database. This list does not include journal titles thar are only indexed in a database.

The "Find Journals" option is located on the Powell Library's home page. See Figure 1.

"Find Journals" is especially useful when your professor recommends a specific journal to use for your research or you find a reference to an article in the course of your research and you need to get the actual article.

You must first determine if the library has the journal containing the desired article. Select the "Find Journals" option then search for the JOURNAL title; NOT the article title.

If the full text of the journal is available, compare the date of the article against the dates of coverage for the journal.  If it’s covered, select the journal title and use either "Search within this publication" or the volume & issue list to search for your article. See steps below:

  1. From Powell Library Resources on the library web site, select Find Journals. (See Figure 1 above)
  2. Within Find Journals, insert the Journal Title and search.  (See Figure 2 below)
  3. If the library provides full text access to the journal, a list with Item Details will appear (See Figure 3 below)
  4. Take note of the Dates of coverage from the available sources and compare to the date of the needed article. (See Figure 4 below)
  5. Select the Journal Title -- NOT the database -- of a suitable source. (See Figure 3 again)
  6. This will take you to the publication information of the Journal within the Database. (See Figure 5 below)
  7. Using either "Search within this publication" or the "All Issues"  option search for the desired article. (See Figure 5)

Troubleshooting

A good troubleshooting trick when something that should work won’t, is to shut down and restart your computer.

Another option is to clear your cache.  Things seem to get clogged up and clearing it all out often helps.

Find Indexed Journals (no full tex)

If you want to find articles in a journal that is indexed but there is no full text, it is necessary to search each online database that is likely to provide indexing for it. For example ATLA and Christian Periodical Index are religious indexing database. They will not have journals on mathematics. Likewise, Business Source Ultimate is not likely to index journals of theology.

You can use the A-Z Databases list to find indexes related to your topic with the help of the Subject drop down menu. Select an appropriate Subject, scroll through the list of Best Bets and select a database that will likely include the needed journal.

Once you get to the database, look for a "Publications" link or within the limiting options look for Publication Name. Insert the need journal title and search. If it is indexed, a list of articles will be retrieved.
