The TMU Robert L. Powell Library is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC) The DDC is a method of categorizing resources by subject. All subjects are organized into ten broad classes (000-999): First Summary - Main Class. Each Main class is then divided into ten division: Second Summary -Hundred Division and each Division is further broken down into ten sections: Third Summary - .Thousand Sections
The Call Number is the address of an item indicating its location within the library. The call number is comprised of the Dewey Decimal number, the Cutter number and often a date or a volume number or even a copy number. Each Dewey Decimal number represents a specific area of knowledge. The Cutter number, a letter/number/letter combination below the Dewey Decimal number, further identifies the work by the author's surname and the title. For example, the call number for J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is as follows:
823.9
T577h
823.9 = English Fiction
T557h = "T577" is the alpha/numeric value given to the name Tolkien; and "h" represents the word "Hobbit" from the title of the book ("A", "An" and "The" in any language are never considered when they are the first words in a title).
The .9 is a decimal number and thus is a larger number than 823.89. Therefore, 823.9 would be shelved after 823.89.
